What I did was to add more fields to the registration form:
location, machine type, and registration-expiration date.
The date defaults to indefinite, but can also be a day, week, month,
or semester. These fields appear as extra fields in the dhcpd.conf
file, and we run a perl script each day to expire as necessary.
The expectation is that someone can always find a person who can register
their machine (ie, has an acct and password) particularly if it is just
for a day. This also allows support personnel to register a machine if
necessary, as they work on it, for a short period.
