Alan-
I've got 1 P3-1.1GHz Linux box w/ dual NICs, 1GB RAM and a 40GB
HD. We see about 5500 students return every fall, and I've never had a
problem with the load on a single server. I've run the UConn scan last
year with all 5500 returning and never got a single hiccup - though the
registration process is noticiably slower, as long as 10-15 seconds while
the scan runs (as opposed to 1-2).
It's worth remembering that NetReg was developed back before
the big, gnarly workhorse servers of today were around; my original NetReg
box was on a PII 350 with 768MB RAM, and it worked just fine for 2 years,
under the same load. Good luck in the fall!
