Well, I just had a first hand experience with file locking.

I'm not exactly sure of the particulars.

It appears that that my dhcpd.conf file got an intertuppted write or
something, because halfway thru my subnet declarations, it was only
partially written, and then I had a bunch of registrations.

To add insult to injury, somehow it got banged up enough that it took out
the dhcpd.conf.bak file.

So what does that mean, This weekend was move in weekend, and today at 10am
I lost every registration that I had. I only had a backup from Friday.

I would definitely recommend that you make a copy of your dhcpd.conf and put
it somewhere.

Mike
