We've been running the ISC DHCP server version 3 since its alpha release
without a hitch. I would say it's more stable than many non-beta
commercial packages out there. ISC has always put out very good quality
software and they are really good about releasing patches quickly if
there is a discovered problem. I was on the dhcp server mailing list
for quite some time and Ted Lemon (major developer of the dhcp stuff at
ISC) is really good about answering mailing list questions very quickly
(usually same-day replies).
Currently we have 1 NetReg server that handles our ResNet. We're
(hopefully) going to two load-sharing/redundant NetReg servers before
the fall (plans are to NetReg the entire campus).
I believe the dhcp server has a fail-over protocol for using multiple
servers. I haven't looked at this thoroughly yet. Maybe someone that
has set this up can enlighten us.
