Interesting. We don't have NetReg running here at Saint Mary's yet,
but I plan to assign static addresses to the resnet machines. My
managers like the idea of fixed addresses to make audit trails more
straightforward.
I figure I could put all resnet IP addresses in one pool and assign
it our faux DNS.
During registration, I would let the DHCP server dynamically assign
an address to a machine which the netreg scripts would ascertain,
along with the MAC address of the machine. As part of the
registration, the scripts will generate a host entry in the dhcp.conf
file for that particular machine and assign our real DNS to the host.
The machine "permanently" (for the semester, anyway) gets the IP
address the DHCP server originally assigned to it.
This is possible since parameters in more specific scopes override
those of more global scopes (and a host record is about as specific
as you can get).
Maybe I'm preaching to the choir here, but I strongly suggest that
anybody who wants to understand the ISC DHCP server as well as DHCP
in general get the book "The DHCP Handbook" by Ralph Droms & Ted
Lemon (ISBN 1-57870-137-6). I've read nearly half the book over the
weekend and it really clarified the DHCP process (and netreg) to me.
I haven't read it yet, but there's a chapter on automatic DHCP client
registration in the book as well.
Sorry if you've heard all this before, but I just joined the list. :-/
