Our college decided to use netreg slightly differently than what is in the
examples. Instead of giving a user a completely different subnet if they
haven't registered we created a "temporary address pool" in the lower portion
of each subnet. That way if we need the student to do an important web request
they can still reach the site if they input the IP address and don't depend on
DNS. This also enabled us to test to see if someone is "cheating netreg." I
created a handful of perl scripts that gather info about a given subnet and if
used as cron jobs can routinely gather information about all subnets active on
netreg. Then there is a script that analyzes those log files and will report
if someone is cheating by either using a specified DNS server or has a static
address. If anyone is interested in looking at my scripts just shoot me an
email. They all run directly from the command line and all that is needed is
perl.
