The Reggie version (Brown U.) is being stripped of its localization so
if you can wait that might be the best way to go. Or, if you're fairly
well-versed in perl then I imagine it should not be too hard to edit the
localized parts of the Reggie code on your own. I wanted something up
and running right away and I found it relatively straightforward using
just 1.3 source and the provided samples included in
Net::Nessus::ScanLite. NetReg's value significantly increases once you
integrate nessus scanning into the registration process.

For smaller schools, and if you had a beefy enough box, you could run
nessus and netreg on the same box. Using Bind 9.x views, you could also
run both the real and bogus name server. We use a separate 'non-bogus"
name server, but do run both nessus and netreg on a multi-processor IBM
blade handling 500+ users on campus.

Your netreg system becomes your primary dhcp server so you need to have
the dhcpd daemon running on the same system as the netreg perl modules.
Not sure how you'd go about using the failover features of dhcp. I'd be
interested to know, too.

Subject: NetReg: Best of worlds...

I'm just starting out here, and not sure if it's a bad omen or what,
with the archives down... (I do assume someone is aware of it, right)

In any case, and not looking at version 2 since it's not deemed for
production yet (and I don't want at this point have to put on a DB Admin
hat), I'm trying to figure out what is most people doing out there.

Is the best version now a combination of St. Mary's and UConn's nessus
scan ?

What about dhcp's failover mode on v3.0.1 ? I do understand that one of
the servers would be the only one acting as the registration server, but
would dhcp be able to update the lease info to the other one ?

Thanks in advance...
