Thanks to those who helped out both on list and off. Just to follow up,
we got everything working with apache-ssl, which seemed to be an easier
task than solving our Apache 2.x problems. As was suggested, we just had
to tweak some paths, mostly in variables.pl. We will do our best to
write up and submit our Debian installation notes.
