I had the same problem here a while ago (Netreg 1.3rc2 / IMAP auth) Turned out that the authentication function returned the number of messages in the users Inbox.
The students authenticated successfully, but had zero messages. Thus the 'authentication failed' message when allive==0 or !alive, depending on your code.

I've never used this module for authentication. The documentation I
found at http://theoryx5.uwinnipeg.ca/CPAN/data/Net-IMAP-Simple/Simple.html
suggests that the API is similar to Net::POP3, which seems to return true
or false for most methods. Try adding $alive to the error message, so
you can see if some other status value is being returned.

Haven't seen that either. Do you get some error message, i.e. what
behaviour do you see?
