I'm working towards setting something like www.netdisco.org up and
allowing netreg to query it for information like IP (or MAC) to port
relation using SNMP I believe. If you then labeled ports within the
switch to correspond to drop/room number you'd have the info you're
looking for. This would be dependent on the network setup you have, we
run all Cisco equipment so it should be easy once I get netdisco up and
running.

Subject: NetReg: using netreg in a k12 environment

I'm looking at possibly using netreg in a k12 school district. The use
will be a little different than most of you use though.

Our biggest concern are machines popping up in our buildings that we
don't know about. There's really no problem with teachers bringing in
laptops and plugging them in, but we need to know those machines are out
there.

The majority of the machines will be registered by us if this system is
implemented since those will be classroom machines in elem schools, and
computer labs, etc.

Right now we attempt to track machines by running a win2k dhcp server
that automatically creates host names based on the machine name on macs
or PCs. It's nice, but doesn't give us any control over what is out
there.

We need to be able to identify the locations of machines. We used
hostnames for this. In our case, the username isn't going to be very
helpful or useful since we'll be registering 99% of the machines. It
doesn't look like there is an easy way to set a hostname when
registering a machine? How hard would that be to add?

Suggestions? Comments?
