I'm using Linux 9.0 and the http installation is customized. However, the problem is caused by ssl. httpd will start fine without the startssl option. Since I had to re-generate my public and private keys I think the verisgn cert does not like the new CSR (or public key) and is causing the httpd service to shutdown. I think is this the problem. Thanks for your help.

Have you installed http on your own? I'm not sure what OS you are using,
but the packaged install of apache may be somewhere else and the call being
made by 'service httpd start' could point to this version instead of your
newer, customized version. Do a find on httpd to see if any discrepancies
exists.

I feel as if this is a stupid question, but I need to ask it anyway,
because
I do not know the answer.
There was a short power outtage which for some reason prevents httpd
from
starting on the netreg machine. Here is what happened and what I did as
a
result.
1. Power went out. => 30 seconds later power returned
2. For some reason the httpd process stops running
3. Tried to start httpd process with the command: service httpd start
4. SSL did not like my pass phrase => so I re-generated the public and
private keys.
5. Tired starting httpd again, => says it worked ( i.e. [OK] )
6. Checked running processes with ps -A => httpd not running
7. Checked all logs in the log/httpd directory to find error => found
nothing related the my current problem
8. Rebooted => same problem
9. Ask for help => any suggestions?
Justin
