IIRC, you're using the CIDR kit, but correct me if I'm wrong...
The only way a registered MAC address is associated with a subnet is
through the recorded unregistered IP address in the comment part
of the entry in dhcp.conf[.new]. That is the reason you will never
find a student in their new subnet, when they registered in a different
one. In the CIDR kit, you still should be able to find them through
either the lease manager, or clicking on the encirled "L" in the subnet
overview of the subnet on which that student registered. All lease
lookups happen based on MAC address.
Is this a problem? Perhaps, but there seem to be a few approaches to
fix this: 1) edit dhcpd.conf.new directly and change the unregistered
IP address in the comment to one associated with the new subnet (pick
any one you like, it doesn't matter), 2) delete the entry (via admin.cgi)
and have the student re-registered in the new subnet, or 3) live with it,
but force all students to re-register every term/quarter/semester, since
most housing/subnet moves would happen then. The later seems to be the
practice of several people here.
Does that help?
