Hi Patrick,

I would recommend you run NetReg on its own box if possible. There are
a variety of reasons for this:

1) There are relatively detailed instructions for doing so.
2) The DNS hack doesn't interfere with other services perhaps running
on that box.
3) You can use an old (otherwise useless) system for you NetReg box.
We are using the original system we developed NetReg on more than 2
years ago -- a Pentium 200 -- which was considered outdated then. It
runs flawlessly and NEVER runs at a loadavg > 1 (usually it's at 0.01!)
4) Linux and [Free|Open|Net]BSD are free and have a tremendous amount
of online support documentation and peers, and is what the majority of
persons on this list use (which is the best reference for help with a
NetReg system).
5) Depending on your network setup, you can probably run DHCP on the
NetReg system for those users whom are on network segments that you want
to do registration, and keep your W2K DHCP server for the others. This
is exactly what we did initially with our setup. We left our legacy
HPUX DHCP system running for faculty and administration and used the
NetReg box for networks that served the students. Recently we have
migrated ALL of our DHCP services to the NetReg box even though we are
not requiring registration still for Faculty/Staff.

Everyone's situation is different, but perhaps some of those items have
helped. I know some people have been hesitant to run GNU or OpenSource
operating systems becuase of security concerns; however, you can (and
should) shut off ALL services on your NetReg box except for SSH, HTTP,
DHCP, and DNS. Then, like on any OS, you will just have to keep up to
date on security bulletins for those services and not worry much about
the OS.
