One of the ideas that we are moving towards including is the ability to
check to see if the student is registering from one of the ports in their
room. This will be done with some snmp scripting (the current hurdle), and
will provide an extra layer of security, to make sure that students are
registering as themselves, and to prevent the "helpful brother-floor buddy"
from registering on someone else's computer.
I realize this is more important for situations where static IP assignments
are made, and requires that housing information for the registrant is
available to the script, so this won't apply to everyone.
I've found that the management integrates better with other functions I
perform if it is in a database. So I would vote for the mysql (or other
database) integration, since we've already moved in that direction.
If a mysql database is included in NetReg 2, then web-based management tools
using that database for my student workers and myself would definitely be
useful.
I found that a method for tracking volume of current leases would be very
helpful, since we exceeded our capacity for a while. This would probably
apply to most other schools too.
Activations by date/dorm/hall/subnet/OS/NIC-type reports would all be
useful. I get many of them already by using the database, but still have to
integrate the auto NIC-manufacturer lookup.
We currently do static IP over DHCP, and my database is constructed so that
DNS names and IP's correspond (rn-10-24 == x.x.10.24), and can be changed in
their correlation to student assignments. I am planning to use different
schemes on a semester-basis to help prevent "IP-guessers" from easily
hard-coding an address.
Sorry for another long-winded contribution. Hope some of this helps, and if
any of our code would be useful, let me know.
